Common Sense Rail Safety Campaign Launches in California

Rail Safety Awareness Campaign Launches in California

Common Sense campaign targets younger demographic to prevent pedestrian-train tragedies

OAKLAND - California leads the nation in pedestrian-train fatalities, and the Sacramento to Oakland train corridor is one of the deadliest in the state in the past 12 months the Bay Area has experienced an upward trend in deadly incidents. Amtrak and Operation Lifesaver, the national, nonprofit rail safety education group, are partnering with local transportation agencies and freight railroads to launch Common Sense, an internet-based awareness campaign to address this problem.

WHAT: Press conference to introduce the Common Sense public safety awareness campaign, including a website and new public service announcements. The event's speakers will include the mother of a Fresno 15-year old who died while playing on the tracks. California and national statistics for pedestrian-train deaths and injuries will be released, along with safety tips and materials from the new campaign. The event's speakers will include the mother of a Fresno 15-year old who died while playing on the tracks.

WHY: Many Californians have no idea that walking or playing around train tracks is potentially deadly and always illegal. Injuries and fatalities associated with trespassing on railroad property are a significant - and growing - problem. Death by train is not just a tragedy for the victim. Such incidents are painfully traumatic for the loved ones left behind, as well as the engineer, staff and passengers who are on the train involved in the accident.
